My girls wake up before I do. They get up and they do their chores (mostly) make an elaborate plan for the day (that I pretty-much squash), and begin some crazy-assed project (mess). This is all before I even get up. It’s like 7:15 at this point. I’m still naked and my face is still puffy from getting old while I sleep. It’s a shocking thing to wake up like this. But always...interesting.
The other morning I woke up to the very busy girls. They were fully dressed and planning a birthday party for one of their dolls. It was going to be outside. It’s all wet and cold outside, but that was the plan. They asked me to carry a plastic play kitchen table thing outside for them and I said no. The weather was outside, the kitchen is an inside toy. And by this time I could see that they had assembled every single doll they own in preparation for the party. That table is not made for that kind of party.
So I say, “You guys are going to have to make a table out of something outside. Get a piece of wood and put it over something.” That’s what I said to my actual children at 7:20am.
“Great Idea!” my oldest says and off she went, little sister in tow. They came up from the basement with a bunch of wood, hammer and nails. They were going to build a table for their outdoor winter birthday party. I've been trying to hang back lately and see what they do on their own, but the stuff they had was all wrong. Luan for the top?! That’s crazy. And 1x’s for the legs. No.
So I helped them find a piece of ½ inch plywood from the basement and I cut them four legs out of some 4x4's I had.
And then they built a table.
My daughters built a table for a birthday party for one of their dolls. Like it was just something in the way of the fancy party they were planning, so they got it done. They probably spent way more time decorating the table top than building it, and it was beautiful. Everyone who was anyone was there. I even got another plate to go when I had to leave early.
My favorite part of this isn't even that they built a table. What I really love is that their solution was to build a table. Incredible.
